It is easy to take our vision for granted, especially when one has never had any issues with their eyes. The human eye is one of the most complex organs in the human body, second to the brain. Roughly being just over 2 centimeters in diameter (think 2 sugar cubes next to each other) the human eye has over 2 million moving parts. It can detect 500 shades of grey and over 2.7 million colors. It is the “window to one’s soul” providing light to our lives.
At Integrity Eye Associates, we are enthusiastic about keeping your eyes happy and healthy by providing comprehensive yearly exams at our office in Wayne, Pa.
Just some more interesting facts about the human eye:
- Babies are born color blind. Newborns can only focus about 8 to 12 inches from their face and can only see black, white and gray. Color vision begins to develop within the first week and be fully developed by five months of age. It takes several weeks before they can see their first primary color – red.
- The “red eye” that occurs in photos is the camera’s flash bouncing off the back of the eyes which contain many blood vessels, causing them to appear red. These light rays travel through the pupil, the opening in the middle of the eye. The pupil doesn’t have enough time to shield the eyes from the flash, and the light goes to the retina and reflects back causing red eyes on film.
- Have you ever wondered how many times you blink per day? What about per minute? On average, a person blinks about 8 – 21 blinks per minute. The blink rate increases when we are engaged in conversation and decreases when focusing on specific visual tasks like reading or focusing on a computer. So, don’t forget to blink while studying or working!
- Blue-eyed people listen up because you might be related! If your eyes are blue, a recent study shows that you share a common ancestor with every other blue-eyed person. It’s believed that blue eyes are the result of a genetic “accident” in the Black Sea region 6,000 – 10,000 years ago. Before then we all had brown eyes.
- Your eyes stay the same size your entire life, from birth to death, but your ears and nose continue to grow as the year’s pass.
