May 8, 2019 at 9:30 pm | How Losing Sleep Hurts Your Eyes

Feeling a little drowsy? If you said “yes,” you’re not alone. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 30 percent of Americans get fewer than six hours of sleep every night. Unfortunately, staying up too late too often can bring back poor results at your next eye exam. Sleep is necessary for great eye health—so before you stay up and binge watch that next season on Netflix, consider these three negative eye health consequences that stem from poor sleep.

Eye Spasms

Have you ever been at work and noticed that your eye is twitching involuntarily? Twitches (sometimes referred to by their medical name, “myokymia”) occur more frequently in men and women who don’t get enough sleep. While eye twitches might not be dangerous, chronic twitching can be disruptive and can make it more difficult to drive or complete your work.

Dry Eyes

Our body needs sleep to replenish and refresh all of our organs—including our eyes. A lack of sleep can cause chronic dry eyes, a condition in which our tear ducts aren’t able to adequately lubricate our eyes. Symptoms of dry eyes include itching, swelling, light sensitivity, and redness. If you have severe dry eyes, you may even have blurry vision or dizziness.

Broken Blood Vessels

Blood vessels in your eyes can pop or break when your eyes are strained. If you’ve ever spent a long time staring at a computer or television screen without taking a break, you’ve probably noticed one or two broken blood vessels in your eye. A lack of sleep causes immense strain and pressure on our eyes, which can lead to more broken blood vessels or the look of “bloodshot” eyes.

Just like every other part of your body, your eyes need special care to stay healthy and happy. Integrity Eye Associates can help your eyes look and feel their best with vision tests, eye exams, and the designer frames available at our office near Paoli, PA.
